Weve heard more than our share of B.S. answers when we ask that question. Want to know how many of them say chocolate? That was only funny the first hundred times.Cant everyone just get along?Theres a well-known saying that you shouldnt judge another person unless youve walked a mile in their shoes. Thats why job seekers should anticipate what employers are looking for during the job search process, while employers should be equally empathetic about job seekers expectations.

3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone - The Muse3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone A few months ago, my company announced that itd be participating in a recreational softball league. At first, I was content to ignore that news. While Id played baseball for a couple of years in high school, I wasnt very good. And mora importantly, while I wasnt brand new at my job, I still wasnt the most recognized person at the company- so the whole proposition seemed incredibly scary. But, ultimately, I decided it was a good way to stay active after work and signed up. We wrapped up our season this week, and two things came of it. First, we lost. A lot. Secondly, I learned a lot about the value of leaving your comfort zone at work- here are a few of those lessons. 1. Your Colleagues Want to Get to Know You, TooWhen I joined the softball team, I quickly realized I was the one of the only people in my department on the roster. And for a day or two, I completely regretted it. I can be outgoing when I want to be, but still need the support of someone I know to settle into new groups. So, the thought of playing a sport that Im elend very good at, in front of a bunch of people I do elend know, kept me up at night. But then, a funny thing happened I realized that even though we work in different departments and knew nothing about each other before joining this team, everyone was pretty open to getting to know me. Not only was this a huge relief, but it was also a good reminder that most people youll work with want to get along with their co-workers just as much as you do. So you really dont have much to lose by putting yourself out there. This doesnt just apply to company clubs and teams, but also to seeing unfamiliar faces in the kitchen or at a large meeting. Put yourself out there and say hi, (thats it), odds are high the other person will be happy you did it first. 2. You Will Not Lose Respect in the Office if You (Literally) issue on Your FaceThose of you who follow me on Twitter might already know this, but in the second-to-last game of the season, I fell on my face as I tried to run to first base. My reward was a bruised hip and a painful case of turf-burn. But as I fell to the ground, I worried that my teammates (and remember, my esteemed colleagues) wouldnt let me live it down for as long as I worked for the company. And sure, they laughed. But they did so in a way that made me feel OK about the whole thing. One teammate said, Well, that just about sums up our season. Want a beer? Another came up to me and said, I did the same thing last week when you were out of town. Back in the office, a few of them asked how I was recovering, but otherwise, I never experienced any backlash or embarrassment about it. In fact, a few people commended me for giving it my all. So, while I left with a few scars, I did not lose any respect from the people I work with. Its a good reminder that youre allowed to fail in front of your co-workers. Youre allowed to screw-up and embarass yourself without losing all your credibility (assuming its an honest mistake). The key is that you get right back up, admit to what happened- which wasnt hard in my case- and move forward. 3. Youll be More Resilient When Things Dont Go Your Way at WorkI cant emphasize this enough I am not very good at softball, at all. All of the clichs about how the ball doesnt always bounce your way apply to me. In fact, three weeks before I was scheduled to run a half-marathon, a hard ground ball hit me on the kneecap and caused me to fragestellung to the ground in a crumped heap. One million different thoughts ran through my head. For starters, I was embarrassed. Then came a strong dose of inadequacy. And then came the fear that if I was actually hurt, I wouldnt be able to run the half marathon I had been training for. Fortunately, it was just a bruise and I was able to walk it off, but it did lead to an epiphany- I realized Id been feeling similar insecurity ab out a project I just couldnt figure out at th office. Embarrassment, inadequacy, fear that I might ultimately be told to go home and never come back. But the night before, I was able to pick myself up and finish the game, even after getting popped on the knee. And I realized that in an incredibly corny coincidence, the same should be true about that task I just couldnt figure out. Whats more, it occurred to me there was one common thread between the two situations I needed to suck up my pride, dust myself off, and ask for some help to finish the job. If you had told me three months ago that Id be comparing sports to my work, I would have told you to go home and never call me again. But here I am, doing just that, because there were a lot of valuable lessons learned from joining the softball team at work. Maybe softballs not your thing, and maybe your company doesnt even have a team. This is a great opportunity for the employer to get some insight into who you are as a person. After all, you are interviewing for a position where you will be spending at least 40 hours a week together. It makes sense that the interviewerwould want to know what kind of a person they would be working with. This question should not be difficult. Everyone has different hobbies and interests and sometimes, unique hobbies are the coolest ones! Just because the interviewerdoesn’t play the piano doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t greatly admirepianists. Don’t be nervous, and don’t lie! Let them inside of the real, nonwork you, if even just for this one question. Mistakes to avoid When answering what kind of things you like to do outside of work you definitely don’t want to be unprofessional. This doesn’t mean that all of your hobbies have to be work-related. But they shouldn’t be things that could have a negative impact on your work. For example, if a hobby of yours is that you like to go out on weekdays and party it up at the club, you probably shouldn’t mention this since it could negatively impact your work the next morning. However, saying that you like to enjoy a beer after a long day of work or hang out with some friends is perfectly fine. Another mistake to avoid is being too vague. For example, don’t just say: I love to travel, I like to invest money,I love to cook, and I like watching TV. Try to avoid simply listing. This doesn’t tell the interviewer and you potential boss much. Give details! Metally prepare before your interview. Ask yourself things like: Where do you like to travel? What do you invest money in? What do you cook/favorite foods? What do you watch on TV? What do you like to do with your friends? If you are specific, you encourage conversation and show-off some of your social skills to the interviewer. This is what you want to do! Sample answer When you respond, you want to be specific enough to encourage conversation. But you also don’t want to be so specific that you get caught up in the excitement and ramble. So how do you give a response that is not too vague and not too specific? Here’s an example of howto respond when the interviewer asks, “What kind of things do you do outside of work?”: “Thanks for asking! I love playing the piano. I am actually in a classical music band called the Classicools and we perform all around town at various venues. We meet up and practice every Saturday at my house. But I also spend a lot of time after work practicing songs or writing new music if I am bored.” This is just one example. I recommend that you list 2-3 hobbies such as the one above, along with a little story. Provide more information than just saying, “I play the piano.” Do you just like to play the piano? Do you love it? The above statement doesn’t tell us much. Giving a short statement like this makes you sound uninterested in your own hobby. Don’t be afraid to sound passionate! Why do interviewers ask this question? Why would interviewers and hiring managers care what you do outside of work? Basically, they want to know what kind of person they’ll be working with! Relaxing with a beer shows you acknowledge you need to let your mind rest. Taking classes (i.e. art, meusic, creative writing, etc.) shows you like learning new things. Volunteering shows you like to give back to the community (and is especially good to mention if the company has a history of volunteer work). If you go to the gym, it shows you take care of your physical self. If you have a hobby that relates to the job you are applying for, mention it! The Best Font Size and Type for Resumes The Best Font Size and Type for Resumes When you’re writing your resume, your font choice does matter. Its important to opt for a basic font â€" choose one that both hiring managers and applicant management systems can easily read. Your resume is no place to use difficult-to-read cursive, handwriting-style, or calligraphy fonts. Why Does Resume Font Choice Matter? There are a few reasons why its important to keep the font on your resume simple. First of all, many of them are read by the applicant tracking systems and not by people. Those systems work best reading text rather than fancy formatting. Its not just the machines that benefit from easily readable text â€" human eyes also find it easier. Dont Make the Size Too Small Make it easy for hiring managers and potential interviewers to read through your entire resume. Choose a font size thats between 10 and 12. This will ensure that no one has to squint to read through all the information on this important document. Hiring managers and recruiters typically spend seconds glancing at each resume before moving it to the “yes” or “no” pile. Make your resume difficult to read, and you might wind up losing out on an opportunity that would have been perfect for you. The Best Resume Font Type to Use Basic bookprint fonts like Arial, Verdana, Calibri, and Times New Roman work well. However, if you are applying to a position in graphic design or advertising (where resume layout and design might be part of your assessment), employers might be open to alternative fonts. You can make section headers a little larger or bold. And dont forget about white space, too. Keep side margins a standard width. Make your name stand out. Your name (which should be placed at the top of your resume) can be slightly larger. Be Consistent Dont overuse capitalization, bold, italics, underlines, or other emphasizing features. Again, basic works best. Do be consistent in your formatting. For example, if you bold one section heading, bold them all. Make sure all your bullet points are indented the same amount, and that alignment and spacing throughout is consistent. How to Select a Font Select a font from the list at the top of your document before you start writing your resume. OR: Type your resume.Highlight the resume.Either select the font from the pop-up window or select the font from the list at the top of the document.Select the font size you want to use the same way. Confirming Your Font Choice Hiring managers may read your resume on screen, but its also quite likely that theyll print out a copy of your resume. So after you have selected a font and font size, it is always wise to print out a copy of your resume. Take a look at your printed resume to see if its easy to scan through. If you have to squint to read, or find the font appears cramped, choose a different one or select a larger size. Bottom line: You want anyone who sees your resume to be able to easily read it. If you can read the document yourself, and youre not using a novelty font (e.g., comic sans, a handwriting font, etc.), youve probably made a good choice. More Resume Style Tips Be consistent. Your resume, cover letter, and other application materials should look like they’re part of the same package. Choose the same font throughout, and make consistent choices about font size, margin width, and formatting.Don’t get fancy. With a few exceptions (such as graphic design or advertising jobs, as mentioned above) it’s best to keep your resume simple. Creative resumes may put off the hiring manager … or get stuck in the applicant tracking system and never make it a human HR person. Remember: the goal is to impress the reader with your skills and experience, not your resume style choices. Aiming for one page? Don’t tweak your font size to meet your goal. Writing a resume isn’t like writing an essay in school. You can’t squeak in under the wire by making your font larger or smaller. Plus, resume length is less important than resume content. 4 ways to rise at work if you didn't grow up with a lot of money 4 ways to rise at work if you didn't grow up with a lot of money Rising through the corporate ranks isn’t always easy, but there can be  an additional set of challenges if you grew up in a poor- or working-class household and have to learn social codes as well as your job.A Harvard Business Review article by  Nicole Stephens and Sarah Townsend published this week shed light on how working class and middle and upper class people think of themselves. The upshot: they are less individualist than those from privileged backgrounds.Instead, people who grew up without a lot of money tend to see themselves as part of a community, no matter where they are. The authors cited  research  saying that people of lower income tend to consider themselves “interdependent with and highly connected to  others.”They write that parents in these households  â€œteach their children the importance of following the rules and adjusting to the needs of others, in part because there is no economic safety net to fall back on.”Translation: more money equals a developed sense of individualism, because a financial safety net can often replace a human one. But having less money, while it’s hard, can give people a better understanding of human dynamics.This also relates to finding success at in the office if you come from humble beginnings There are ways to bridge the gap.The roles of “social fit and cultural capital”You don’t know about what you haven’t been exposed to, as shown in the Harvard Business Review article.“Even after students graduate from college and transition to professional workplaces, employees from working-class backgrounds report feeling a lack of social fit and cultural capital, compared with their peers. A student at a top business school, reflecting on her experience in a professional workplace, told us: ‘It was kind of a shock to me to be in a workplace and feel very much like I’m in this very elite environment where I just don’t fit in…. I was much more aware of how I talked, how I presented myself, what I wore, what kind of family experiences I chose to share, all those things,'” Stephens and Townsend wrote.Full rides don’t solve all problemsGetting a coveted full ride to one of the most prestigious institutions doesn’t make hardships evaporate for lower-income students.Nick Anderson wrote about the reality of full rides to Ivy league schools in a 2016 Washington Post article, focusing on Columbia University in New York City. While students with scholarships may have tuition taken care of, they still have to watch living expenses carefully, which cuts them out of a lot of social events and outings.Anderson described just how stressful that scarcity of ready cash can be, to the extent of crowd-sourcing meals.“Here at Columbia University, money pressures lead many to cut corners on textbook purchases and skip city excursions routine for affluent classmates. Some borrow thousands of dollars a year to pay bills. Some feel obliged to send money home occasionally to help their fami lies. Others spend less on university meal plans, slipping extra food into their backpacks when they leave a dining hall and hunting for free grub through a Facebook network called CU Meal Share.”Building social and cultural capital in a new economic groupHere’s how to continue to learn and develop within more privileged economic surroundings, even after you’ve scored a job you never would have dreamed of when you were growing up.1. The earlier, the betterDon’t be afraid to start getting out of your comfort zone as soon as you can.A 2011 research article in Research in Higher Education touched on the importance of learning the social codes of new environments as early as possible. Habituation goes a long way.“One’s habitus sets parameters around that which is imaginable; students cannot aspire to a profession that they have not heard about. Still, early interventions and educational experiences can ‘prepare the soil; for an infusion of cultural and social capital that is important for individual mobility.”That doesn’t mean you’ve lost your chance if you’re already out of college. You can still seize opportunities to learn if you’re already working.2. Take free, online courses to build up common skillsYou already graduated with a degree, but consider spending some of your time taking classes for free, even if that means working late at night or on the weekend, on top of your  side hustle. It makes it easier to learn without the social stress of comparisons to classmates, and extra skills will put you on the playing field with colleagues who had ample training in the byways of business before they got to the same office.MOOCs are Massive, Open Online Courses.  The website edX offers courses though schools like MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Boston University and Georgetown University. Classes like Berkeley’s “Academic and Business Writing”  start soon, while Cornell’s “Structuring Business Agreements for Success” starts today.If fore ign languages are the barrier to rising in the organization, there are many ways to learn outside expensive courses. One of our favorites:  learn Spanish, French, Russian, Italian through the  Duolingo website or download it on Apple’s App store  or Google Play  to study up for free.The truth is that rising in the world from a lower-income background is going to be harder. There’s nothing wrong with putting in extra work outside of the office if it gets you where you want to be.3. Listen up during your commuteTo free podcasts, that is.Listening to experts’ engaging conversations about current events, pop culture and everything in between is a great way to learn something new, not to mention a way to guarantee that you’ll be able to chime in at your next dinner party and to form a common bond with people from other backgrounds. Having a common frame of reference is a great way to feel like less of an outsider.Check out NPR’s selection of podcasts on news, business, pop cu lture, the environment and more. People of all backgrounds can make great connections, because what makes a great professional network is the ability to connect with others - and that’s possible regardless of where you came from. In fact, different living experiences are actually an advantage in net working, because our differences are what make us interesting.Another advantage: those from lower-income backgrounds rely on community and are open to collaboration, which makes understanding people easier.We like Kelly Hoey’s Build Your Dream Network as a good primer on how to form good connections that will always be ready with advice or a good job recommendation. (The key: reciprocity. Be there for people who want to be there for you.)Heather R. The career transition out of military is difficult no matter what your rank. The good news is that the federal government is basically just â€Å"the other side of the desk. You’re going to take the â€Å"hands-on skills and technical training from your military experience and convert it over to the policy, program, support, and administration side of the work you have been doing – maybe. The first federal resume after military is your most important resume and the most complex because you will translate your skills for a new career, mission, and customer. Veterans are perfect for federal civil service positions because of their dedication to public service, the nation’s security, specialized expertise, knowledge of certain missions, technical skills and training, leadership, dedication, work ethic, attitude and willingness to learn and start-over. I have used the resume I developed from TAP class and it’s not getting me referred although I’m qualified for these positions. The private-industry resume is shorter than a typical federal resume. The bullet style, one-line description resume won’t be as effective for a federal resume. The recommended format is the outline format. This features your top skills that are transferable to the new position. Military personnel will write one huge â€Å"block of information for their duties and include the accomplishments somewhere in the middle of the paragraph. Solve the problems as they occurred? Brief senior executives on status? Manage resources throughout? Create reports and analyze progress? Then you need to take credit for leadership, innovation, new ideas, methodologies, policies, procedures, project management strategies that YOU developed and implemented. My Worst Job Interview Mistake (and How You Can Avoid It) My Worst Job Interview Mistake (and How You Can Avoid It) I sat across a conference room table from the owner of the marketing agency where I was interviewing. I was fresh out of college and eager to land any sort of role that made use of my communication and journalism degree- which meant I needed to ace this interview for an entry-level position. “So, what exactly is inbound marketing to you?” he asked, while I made a mental note to stop fidgeting with the hem of my shirt, “How would you define it?” Immediately, I froze. I sat there slack-jawed and embarrassed. All I knew about inbound marketing was that it was what this particular agency specialized in. Other than that, I was pretty much stumped- to me, it was nothing but another buzzword I heard thrown around frequently. “Uhh…” I responded, “Well…” After that, I’m sure you can imagine how I talked my way around the question that I had zero idea how to answer. Needless to say, I didn’t get that job. And, while I’ll be the first to admit that I wallowed in my own-self pity for days following that humbling interview, the experience did illustrate one important job search lesson that I will absolutely never forget: you should always, always, always research the company before your interview. It’s cliché advice that likely makes you roll your eyes at this point. What exactly does that even mean? Here are four things you should absolutely research before you ever sit down for that job interview to avoid making the same job interview mistake that I did: 1. The Basics You know that you need to do your research. But, that in and of itself is pretty broad advice. What do you need to know? Is there going to be a pop quiz where you need to recite the company’s entire mission statement in Portuguese? Probably not (at least, I certainly hope not). When you’re job searching, no right-minded employer is going to expect that you’ve dug through the archives and committed every useless factoid to memory. However, you do need to know enough to show that you’re highly interested in that company and engaged in the hiring process. Here are the nuts-and-bolts things you should ensure you have down pat: What the company does: What products do they create? What services do they offer? What problem do they solve? This is where I epically flopped in my own job interview. Major announcements that have recently occurred: Were they recently acquired? Did they just receive a new round of funding? Did they just open up a new office location? What major company happenings should you be aware of? How this role fits within the company: Obviously, you’re interviewing for a specific job. While you won’t have all of the insider insight quite yet, you should have a solid grasp on how this role and its related department fits into the big picture and helps the company achieve its overarching goals. If you can have at least those three things well-researched and in your back pocket, you’re sure to make a positive impression. 2. Your Interviewer While you need to have an understanding of the company and the job in general, it also doesn’t hurt to do a little bit of digging on the people who will be conducting your interview. Whether it’s someone from HR or the department leader you would potentially be working under, do some clever searching to see what you can find out about those points of contact. Granted, you won’t be expected to know any of these things. But, if you can find a shared point of interest- maybe you’re both alumni of the same college or you’re both training for your first marathon, for example- that never hurts to establish some rapport and leave a memorable mark. 3. A Fact Relevant to the Position Now that you have some basic knowledge of the entire company and your specific interviewer, it’s time to dive more into the actual position that you’re applying for. Do your best to arm yourself with two or three research-backed and position-relevant facts that you can weave into your answers. To stick with our marketing example, when asked about what interests you about that particular role, you could tie in a company fact to your answer like this: “I’ve seen the high-quality work you complete at this agency, such as that entire social campaign you did for the local food shelter. I’m eager to bring my own creativity to your team and to continue launching amazing projects like that one.” This answer is impressive, because it touches on your passion for the work along with showcasing your existing knowledge of the company. 4. A Random Tidbit Finally, it never hurts to just have one random fact about the company stashed and ready to go. It might go totally unused. However, if you find a natural way to work it in, it’s a surefire way to make yourself that much more memorable. Whether they just raised a certain sum of money for a local charity or you’re confident that you’d dominate their company-wide chili cook-off, going beyond the website to get some lesser-known facts demonstrates that you’re highly interested in the company and the opportunity. I still blush at the memory of flubbing one of my first job interviews by not adequately researching the company. Fortunately, you don’t need to make the same mistake. Make sure that you know these four things mentioned above before your next job interview, and you’re sure to have your bases covered. Getting an appointment is generally a sign of interest on behalf of your prospects and each appointment set should be seen as a victory. Having more appointments leads to more chances to make a sale. Submitting a Proposal As part of many sales cycles, you will need to deliver some sort of a proposal to your customer that spells out your offered solution or product along with the price. As in each other step of the sales cycle and numbers game, the more proposals you can bring to qualified, interested parties, the more sales youll make. Close the Deal Each step in a sales cycle should be designed to lead up to closing the deal. If you did a thorough job with qualifying the customer and designing a proposal that matches the customers needs and handles any objections, then you should be all set to close the deal. This, of course, sounds much easier than it is but closing a sales cycle in which you did not do a good job with the steps leading up to the close is significantly more challenging. How to Set Up and Play The Numbers Game While some may argue that there are more steps to a typical sales cycle than the basics presented here, these four steps provide a solid summary of a sales cycle. To understand the numbers game part of sales, you need to start with your goals. In other words, armed with a full understanding of your compensation plan, determine much money you want to earn in your position. Once you are clear on how much total compensation you want to earn, figure out how much you earn on an average sale. If you are too new to the position to know what an average sale pays, ask your co-workers for their average income per sale. Once you know the average commission for an average sale, divide your total desired commission income by the average sales commission amount. The result will be the number of sales you need to close in a year to hit your income goal. To serve as a simple example, assume that you need to close 50 sales per year to hit your income goal. Next, determine how many proposals that you deliver result in a closed sale. Again, if you are new to your sales position, reach out to your co-workers to find out how many proposals usually end up with a sale. Using the above example of having to close 50 sales to hit your goal, assume that you need five proposals to close one deal. In the example, you will need to deliver 250 proposals in a year to make 50 sales and hit your income goal. The next step is to determine how many appointments you need before finding a customer who is ready for, and qualified for a proposal to be designed and presented. To keep things clean, assume you need two appointments before finding a prospect to propose to. Using the example numbers, you will need 500 appointments per year to arrive at 250 proposals. The last step is to find out how many prospecting calls you will need to complete. Again, determine how many prospecting calls (cold calls, phone calls, etc.) that you need to secure a customer appointment. Say that you need five prospecting calls to get one appointment. Putting the Numbers All Together Using the examples above, you can assume that you need five calls to set one appointment, two appointments to deliver one proposal and five proposals to close one deal. Once you have your total number of sales needed to hit your income goal, just work backward to arrive at your specific numbers. In this example, you will need 1,500 prospecting calls to secure 500 appointments, that will yield 250 proposals, resulting in 50 sales. You will need to determine your numbers to make this work for you. Once you know the numbers, you can design your days with much more focus. If you end up needing to make 1,500 prospecting calls per year, you should break this number down to monthly, weekly and daily activity standards. If you work 250 days per year and your numbers show you that you need to make 1,500 prospecting calls, you will have a daily target of 6 prospecting calls per day. Seeing a small number like 6 calls per day is much more motivating than working towards hitting 1,500 calls in a year.
