Rocket scientists, cab drivers, and football players have this in common

Rocket scientists, cab drivers, and football players have this in commonRocket scientists, cab drivers, and football players have this in commonIm not a morning person. To me, sunrises feel as energizing as a root canal. To prepare myself for what felt like a recurring battle each morning, I would set my alarm clock thirty minutes fast. You know the rest of the story.Kid, meet snooze button. In economics lingo, I would consume those thirty minutes instead of saving them by repeatedly hitting snooze like a proposition in a Skinner box. There is a phenomenon that explains my love-hate relationship with the snooze button. The same phenomenon shows why head and neck injuries increased in American football after players started wearing hard-shelled helmets to better protect themselves. It explains why installing anti-lock brakes- a now-ancient technology introduced in cars in the 1980s to avoid skidding- didnt decrease the number of accidents. It also explains why marking crosswalks didnt m ake crossing the street any safer- in some cases, it led to more fatalities and injuries. The psychologist Gerald Wilde calls this phenomenonrisk homeostasis. The phrase is fancy, but the idea is simple In some cases, measures intended to decrease risk backfire. Humans compensate for the reduced risk in one area by increasing risk in another.Marked crosswalks dont increase safety because pedestrians develop a false sense of security and assume drivers are more likely to stop. They become less vigilant about looking both ways for oncoming traffic before crossing. Before hard helmets were introduced in American football, players would wear leather helmets that provided little protection to the head. As a result, they would use their shoulders as the initial point of contact. After players started to wear hard helmets, they began to lead tackles with their heads, which led to increased injuries and fatalities.Over a three-year period, a study welches conducted in Munich. One portion of a taxicab fleet was equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS). The remainder of the cabs had traditional, non-ABS brakes. The cars were identical in all other respects. They drove at the same time of day, the same days of the week, and in the same weather conditions. The drivers also knew whether their car was equipped with ABS.The study found no tangible difference in accident rates between the ABS-equipped cars and the remainder. But one difference was statistically significant driving behavior. The drivers of the ABS-equipped cars became far more reckless. They tailgated more often. Their turns were sharper. They drove faster. They switched lanes dangerously. They were involved in more near-misses.Safety measures also backfired in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle tragedy that claimed the lives of seven astronauts. The explosion resulted from a catastrophic flaw in the O-rings- thin rubber bands that seal the joints of the rocket boosters that launch the shuttle and prevent hot gases from leaking out. There were two O-rings on each joint- a primary and a secondary, for good measure- because the function they serve is critical. On the morning of Challengers launch, temperatures in Cape Canaveral were uncharacteristically cold. As a result, two engineers at Morton Thiokol, the company that built the rocket boosters, recommended a delay of the launch, believing that cold temperatures could compromise the O-rings.But the upper management overruled the engineers recommendations. The managersdecidedthat the O-rings had a sufficient safety margin to enable them to tolerate three times the worst erosion observed up to that time. Whats more, there was a failsafe in distributions-mix They had faith in the secondary O-ring if anything happened to the primary. This belief boosted a sense of invincibility and led to catastrophe when both the primary and the secondary O-ring failed during launch. These rocket scientists were like football players tackling with their helm et-protected heads or German cabbies in ABS-equipped cars driving fast and loose. In each case, implementing the safety measure gave us the satisfaction of doing something about a problem. But each left unaddressed the human cause behind the technical cause- a la the dream within a dream in the movieInception. In other words, the safe felt more safe than it actually was. The corresponding behavior change eliminated any benefit from the safety measure. In some cases, the pendulum swung in the other direction The activity became less safe than it was before the safety measure was put in place. This doesnt mean that we stop fastening our seat belts, buy ancient cars that dont come with ABS, or take up jaywalking.Instead, pretend the crosswalk isnt marked and walk accordingly. Assume the secondary O-ring or the ABS brakes wont prevent the accident. Keep your head out of the tackle, even if youre wearing a helmet. Act as if your clock isnt thirty minutes fast or that you didnt receive an ex tension on that project deadline. The safety netmaybe there to catch you if you fall, but youre better off pretending it doesnt exist.Inspirations Gerald Wilde,Target Risk Malcolm Gladwell,Blowup William Starbuck Frances Milliken,Challenger Fine-Tuning the Odds Until Something Breaks.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. How to stop sabotaging your career with bad thoughts

How to stop sabotaging your career with bad thoughtsHow to stop sabotaging your career with bad thoughtsWhen youre in the wrong headspace at work (for whatever reason), negativity can slowly creep in and threaten your performance - or at least make the experience a lot harder to get through.Heres how to stop those negative thoughts from ruining your career.Leave your impostor syndrome at the doorIts easy to feel like you got your job because of pure luck, or that there are only so many hours until your boss finds out that youre a fake, but you shouldnt give in to impostor syndrome.Sure, when other people ask smart questions or make insightful comments during meetings, its also easy to think, Im way out of my league here. Everyone else is so much better suited for their jobs than I am.When your boss decides that your ideas for the latest project arent the direction the team should go in, you might also feel unproductive. But you should remember that you most likely got the job for rea sons other than luck - such as experience, skill, and leadership potential. So treat these experiences with others as opportunities to learn something - after all, youve probably contributed something to the team that someone else wouldnt have been able to come up with.Let negative coworkers stew in their feelings - without youResearch has found that witnessing rudeness in the morning can sabotage the rest of your day, but that doesnt mean this has to be the case every time - the study also found that a bit of confidence can go a long way. There also comes a certain point where you have to let people deal with their emotions in their own way, and move forward, remembering all that you have to be thankful for.The same goes for absorbing your coworkers bad mood(s) throughout the day - sure, you might have to deal with annoyedknow-it-alls, work martyrs and manipulators, but there are a few barriers you can put in place. For example, try to put yourself in their shoes, and dont lash o ut. Instead, just get out of their way so you can focus on your own work.Dont think youll never find careermeaning because you hate your jobDo you ever feel like youll never break free from a job you really dont like? When you walk in, both tired and anxious on a Monday morning, it can leave you feeling stuck without the option to pursue something you really love. You need to hold onto the fact that this isnt forever and you have the power to make decisions that can shape your life for the better. One way to create meaning at a job youre thinking of leavingis to write down all the lessons youve learned - even if you learned them the hard way. As you start to apply elsewhere, think of the position as a stepping stone to a job better suited for you.If youre not in a position to leave your job just yet, make connections with colleagues who can teach you something and look for a mentor.

This is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiring

This is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiringThis is what the cofounder of LOLA looks for when hiringIn case you havent heard, it is no longer taboo to talk about periods. And a big part of that is the growth of the natural tampon market as well as femtech companies and other feminine healthcare startups that are all about promoting honesty and transparency and empowering women by giving them more choices and control. One of the pioneers of this new market is LOLA, the organic tampon startup which launched all the way back in 2014 with its line of direct-to-consumer feminine care products. This was before the Womens March, before period shaming was a concept and before cofounders Alexandra Friedman and Jordana Kier had raised $11.2 million in funding according to Crunchbase (early investors included Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, and Karlie Kloss.)They also just launchedSex byLOLA, a new line ofnatural latex condoms, chemical-free personal lubricant and first of its kind 10 0% natural cleansing wipes, which marks the brands first expansion outside of menstrual care.Ladders spoke with Friedman about collaboration, what she looks for when hiring, and being a cofounder, and mother. On how they inspire collaboration with their teamWere lucky that ur team at LOLA is naturally very driven, creative and resurceful its inspiring to be a part of such a passionate team that so mission oriented. One of the best ways we inspire collaboration is through regular team-building activities and volunteer days that help ground us and remind us of our shared mission. Im also encouraged by our teams openness to lending a hand across the business, and willingness to engage in conversations about their own reproductive health, whether through sharing their first period stories or having really honest office conversations around pregnancy and sexual health. As a leader, I think its important to create and foster open and honest relationships with your team, especially at a com pany like ours that is built around destigmatizing taboo topics and sparking candid dialogue. On learning to be a better leaderI grew up in New York City with two full-time working parents who supported and empowered me in every way - but who also made it very clear that one day I would be expected to support myself. Being raised this way has shaped the kind of leader I am - I want my team to know they have my support, but to also realize that I expect them to be individually empowered to drive the success of an outcome.Ive also worked for a lot of different types of leaders, and from each experience have internalized lessons of what to do and what not to do in certain situations. Even some of the most difficult people Ive encountered in my career have taught me valuable things about what it means to lead well. While I dont know how to qualify better in terms of leading, I can say that each year brings new lessons that are humbling, give me perspective and help me lead with empathy and a more clearly defined vision. On what they look for in potential candidatesEveryone on our team here is passionate about LOLAs mission and who we are. I look for candidates who show real, genuine enthusiasm for our mission and vision. Having a passion for what were doing here is a must, and when we see that passion, we want to work with you.Another characteristic thats important to have in the start-up world is the ability to work cross-functionally in a team, learn quickly, and multi-task. LOLA is a high-growth environment as we expand into new product categories and become the first lifelong brand for a womans body. Priorities and workloads shift from one week to the next. We need to know that our team can run up a learning curve quickly, support those around you, and wear a bunch of hats.On being a mom and a cofounderBeing a mom, especially being a mom to a daughter, has motivated me and made me more committed to LOLAs mission of empowering women at all stages of their lives . As Ive encountered new and different phases of my own reproductive life, Ive realized the multitude of ways that were able to help women through our products and community at LOLA.

Working as an Apple At Home Advisor

Working as an Apple At Home AdvisorWorking as an Apple At Home AdvisorMost Apple hardware comes with a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary telephone technical support, which is provided by AppleCare. The goal is for an Apple expert to resolve customer issues with just one phone call to AppleCare. Most of AppleCares home-based customer service jobs, called Apple At Home Advisors, are virtual call center positions (which includes chat). Apple At Home Advisor jobs are full- or part-time employment positions in a call center, not as independent contractors. As the customers first point of contact, Apple At Home Advisors assess issues and troubleshoot. Apple hires both permanent and temporary (seasonal) work-at-home employees. The company also hires home-based call center managers to oversee the At Home Advisors. Hours and Training for Apple At Home Advisors Student positions are part-time during school sessions (minimum of 16 hours a week) and full-time during breaks and summer. Non-students must commit to 20 hours a week with the possibility of more or less depending on needs. Because of high customer demand on holidays (especially Christmas), AppleCare call center agents must be available to work holidays. Advisors work varied shifts on a seven-day schedule, including nights and weekends. Training can last between five and seven weeks, according to Apples website. Advisors train from home, accessing instructors via a virtual environment. They learn about Apple products, troubleshooting, customer support, and the jobs tools and processes. Qualifying as an Apple At Home Advisor For non-students applying for behauptung positions, two years of experience in technical troubleshooting (in-person or on the phone) is required. Both students and non-students need experience with the iOS, smartphones, tablets, PCs or Macs. According to Apple, an At Home Advisor should be passionate about technology and experienced with computers, have good p eople skills and be able to work independently. Student applicants must be currently enrolled on the campus at which Apple is recruiting and have a 2.7 cumulative GPA. A criminal background check is required for all applicants, and for those applying for the chat positions, typing of 40 words per minute is required. Home Office Requirements for Apple At Home Advisors Apples office requirements differ from the typical home call center office requirements because it provides not only a computer to its call center agents but a headset as well. However, it does require a room with a door to keep out noise, a desk, an ergonomic adjustable chair, a dedicated telephone line, and an Internet connection meeting certain requirements. Hiring Locations for Apple At Home While the main focus of the Apple At Home program is the United States (hiring in more than 30 states), Apple also occasionally recruits for this program in Toronto, Canada Cork, Ireland and Sydney, Australia. At one tim e an Apple At Home Advisors home office had to be within 100 miles of the city designated in the job description now, though, it will hire for these positions from anywhere in the United States. However, its college program for At Home Advisors still only hires from specific college campuses. Applying to be an Apple At Home Advisor To find Apple At Home Advisor jobs, either go to the Apple At Home Advisor web page or search Apples corporate jobs database. The Apple At Home web page provides links to access to the non-student U.S. positions, while the corporate jobs site lists all. Use home as a keyword to search the database or sort the job categories as Customer Service and Support. To apply for a job at Apple you must have or create an AppleID. This is the same as a MobileMe ID or what you would use to access the iTunes Store, Apple Online Store or iChat. What will you make at this job? Apple doesnt disclose salaries or hourly pay on its website, other than stating that all sa laries are competitive and discussed during the recruiting process. In November 2018, Glassdoor.com reported that the national average salary for an Apple At Home Advisor is $30,540 in United States. Others have reported an hourly wage of anywhere between $13 to $16 an hour.

Tell Us Your Biggest Job Search Gripe

Tell Us Your Biggest Job Search GripeJob Search GripesTell Us Your Biggest Job Search GripeA job search can be frustrating, especially if youve been searching for months and coming up empty. And sometimes rightly or wrongly job seekers direct their frustration at employers over their hiring practices. But for every gripe from a job seeker, an employer has one as well about what they read and dont read on resumes and cover letters, and what they hear and dont hear in interviews. The funny thing is that both sides have similar complaints about the other. For instance, look at these examplesJob Seeker ComplaintsEmployer ComplaintsEmployers leave us hanging after we submit our resumes or after were interviewed. Cant they just let us know if were still in the running?Job seekers can be pests by constantly following up on their applications. Dont they realize we have several candidates to evaluate? These things take timeHiring managers ask the dumbest or weirdest questions in an interview. W hats the point in asking whatanimal from the Amazon rain forest Id like to be?Job seekers dont prepare well for interviews. They ramble on and give us too much information on stuff thats not related to the job or their backgrounds.Employers can dance around salary ranges even though they want salary requirements from us. They seem more concerned with how much theyll have to pay me than whether Im the right person for the job.Job seekers dance around their weaknesses when we interview them. Weve heard more than our share of B.S. answers when we ask that question. Want to know how many of them say chocolate? That was only funny the first hundred times.Cant everyone just get along?Theres a well-known saying that you shouldnt judge another person unless youve walked a mile in their shoes. Thats why job seekers should anticipate what employers are looking for during the job search process, while employers should be equally empathetic about job seekers expectations.

3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone - The Muse

3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone - The Muse3 Lessons I Learned When I Left My Comfort Zone A few months ago, my company announced that itd be participating in a recreational softball league. At first, I was content to ignore that news. While Id played baseball for a couple of years in high school, I wasnt very good. And mora importantly, while I wasnt brand new at my job, I still wasnt the most recognized person at the company- so the whole proposition seemed incredibly scary. But, ultimately, I decided it was a good way to stay active after work and signed up. We wrapped up our season this week, and two things came of it. First, we lost. A lot. Secondly, I learned a lot about the value of leaving your comfort zone at work- here are a few of those lessons. 1. Your Colleagues Want to Get to Know You, TooWhen I joined the softball team, I quickly realized I was the one of the only people in my department on the roster. And for a day or two, I completely regretted it. I can be outgoing when I want to be, but still need the support of someone I know to settle into new groups. So, the thought of playing a sport that Im elend very good at, in front of a bunch of people I do elend know, kept me up at night. But then, a funny thing happened I realized that even though we work in different departments and knew nothing about each other before joining this team, everyone was pretty open to getting to know me. Not only was this a huge relief, but it was also a good reminder that most people youll work with want to get along with their co-workers just as much as you do. So you really dont have much to lose by putting yourself out there. This doesnt just apply to company clubs and teams, but also to seeing unfamiliar faces in the kitchen or at a large meeting. Put yourself out there and say hi, (thats it), odds are high the other person will be happy you did it first. 2. You Will Not Lose Respect in the Office if You (Literally) issue on Your FaceThose of you who follow me on Twitter might already know this, but in the second-to-last game of the season, I fell on my face as I tried to run to first base. My reward was a bruised hip and a painful case of turf-burn. But as I fell to the ground, I worried that my teammates (and remember, my esteemed colleagues) wouldnt let me live it down for as long as I worked for the company. And sure, they laughed. But they did so in a way that made me feel OK about the whole thing. One teammate said, Well, that just about sums up our season. Want a beer? Another came up to me and said, I did the same thing last week when you were out of town. Back in the office, a few of them asked how I was recovering, but otherwise, I never experienced any backlash or embarrassment about it. In fact, a few people commended me for giving it my all. So, while I left with a few scars, I did not lose any respect from the people I work with. Its a good reminder that youre allowed to fail in front of your co-workers. Youre allowed to screw-up and embarass yourself without losing all your credibility (assuming its an honest mistake). The key is that you get right back up, admit to what happened- which wasnt hard in my case- and move forward. 3. Youll be More Resilient When Things Dont Go Your Way at WorkI cant emphasize this enough I am not very good at softball, at all. All of the clichs about how the ball doesnt always bounce your way apply to me. In fact, three weeks before I was scheduled to run a half-marathon, a hard ground ball hit me on the kneecap and caused me to fragestellung to the ground in a crumped heap. One million different thoughts ran through my head. For starters, I was embarrassed. Then came a strong dose of inadequacy. And then came the fear that if I was actually hurt, I wouldnt be able to run the half marathon I had been training for. Fortunately, it was just a bruise and I was able to walk it off, but it did lead to an epiphany- I realized Id been feeling similar insecurity ab out a project I just couldnt figure out at th office. Embarrassment, inadequacy, fear that I might ultimately be told to go home and never come back. But the night before, I was able to pick myself up and finish the game, even after getting popped on the knee. And I realized that in an incredibly corny coincidence, the same should be true about that task I just couldnt figure out. Whats more, it occurred to me there was one common thread between the two situations I needed to suck up my pride, dust myself off, and ask for some help to finish the job. If you had told me three months ago that Id be comparing sports to my work, I would have told you to go home and never call me again. But here I am, doing just that, because there were a lot of valuable lessons learned from joining the softball team at work. Maybe softballs not your thing, and maybe your company doesnt even have a team. But, at the end of the day, theres a whole lot to gain from stepping out and leaving your comfort zon e.Photo of courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

What Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of Work

What Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of Work What Kind of Things Do You Like to Do Outside of Work What do you say whenan interviewer asks what kind of things you like to do outside of work? This is a great opportunity for the employer to get some insight into who you are as a person. After all, you are interviewing for a position where you will be spending at least 40 hours a week together. It makes sense that the interviewerwould want to know what kind of a person they would be working with. This question should not be difficult. Everyone has different hobbies and interests and sometimes, unique hobbies are the coolest ones! Just because the interviewerdoesn’t play the piano doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t greatly admirepianists. Don’t be nervous, and don’t lie! Let them inside of the real, nonwork you, if even just for this one question. Mistakes to avoid When answering what kind of things you like to do outside of work you definitely don’t want to be unprofessional. This doesn’t mean that all of your hobbies have to be work-related. But they shouldn’t be things that could have a negative impact on your work. For example, if a hobby of yours is that you like to go out on weekdays and party it up at the club, you probably shouldn’t mention this since it could negatively impact your work the next morning. However, saying that you like to enjoy a beer after a long day of work or hang out with some friends is perfectly fine. Another mistake to avoid is being too vague. For example, don’t just say: I love to travel, I like to invest money,I love to cook, and I like watching TV. Try to avoid simply listing. This doesn’t tell the interviewer and you potential boss much. Give details! Metally prepare before your interview. Ask yourself things like: Where do you like to travel? What do you invest money in? What do you cook/favorite foods? What do you watch on TV? What do you like to do with your friends? If you are specific, you encourage conversation and show-off some of your social skills to the interviewer. This is what you want to do! Now that you are getting close to your interview, make sure you don’t forget the essentials. Check out Preparing For A Job Interview â€" What To Bring, What To Wear, More. Sample answer When you respond, you want to be specific enough to encourage conversation. But you also don’t want to be so specific that you get caught up in the excitement and ramble. So how do you give a response that is not too vague and not too specific? Here’s an example of howto respond when the interviewer asks, “What kind of things do you do outside of work?”: “Thanks for asking! I love playing the piano. I am actually in a classical music band called the Classicools and we perform all around town at various venues. We meet up and practice every Saturday at my house. But I also spend a lot of time after work practicing songs or writing new music if I am bored.” This is just one example. I recommend that you list 2-3 hobbies such as the one above, along with a little story. Provide more information than just saying, “I play the piano.” Do you just like to play the piano? Do you love it? The above statement doesn’t tell us much. Giving a short statement like this makes you sound uninterested in your own hobby. Don’t be afraid to sound passionate! Why do interviewers ask this question? Why would interviewers and hiring managers care what you do outside of work? Basically, they want to know what kind of person they’ll be working with! Just because you’re interviewing for a job doesn’t mean you don’t have a life beyond work. If you rest and do things you enjoy outside of work, it shows you take good care of yourself. (Chances are we would all go crazy if all we did was work, sleep, and eat.) The hobbies and things that you do outside work can say a lot about the kind of person you are. Assumptions the interviewer can drawfrom your hobbies Different hobbies and interests inevitably say different things about you. Don’t feel intimidated or put on the spot. When you think about it, the same goes for any social situation. Yet another reason why the interviewer asks this question. If you can’t express something about yourself with ease, how can they expect you to express any work related ideas? If you can’t talk about yourself one on one, how can you talk about yourself as you get to know your potential coworkers? So what do your hobbies and likes say about you? Some characteristics that can be assumed from your hobbies: Gardening takes a lot of patience. Home improvement requires attention to detail. Relaxing with a beer shows you acknowledge you need to let your mind rest. Taking classes (i.e. art, meusic, creative writing, etc.) shows you like learning new things. Volunteering shows you like to give back to the community (and is especially good to mention if the company has a history of volunteer work). If you go to the gym, it shows you take care of your physical self. If you have a hobby that relates to the job you are applying for, mention it! As said, just be careful not to mention a hobby that has potential to majorly disrupt your work. If you do, the interviewer or hiring manager can assume you won’t take your job seriously. If you can relate your hobby to the job position, this is even better! 50 Top Job Interview Questions Answers Congrats! You are going to kick some bootie in your next interview. The Best Font Size and Type for Resumes

The Best Font Size and Type for Resumes The Best Font Size and Type for Resumes When you’re writing your resume, your font choice does matter. Its important to opt for a basic font â€" choose one that both hiring managers and applicant management systems can easily read. Your resume is no place to use difficult-to-read cursive, handwriting-style, or calligraphy fonts. Why Does Resume Font Choice Matter? There are a few reasons why its important to keep the font on your resume simple. First of all, many of them are read by the applicant tracking systems and not by people. Those systems work best reading text rather than fancy formatting. Its not just the machines that benefit from easily readable text â€" human eyes also find it easier. Dont Make the Size Too Small Make it easy for hiring managers and potential interviewers to read through your entire resume. Choose a font size thats between 10 and 12. This will ensure that no one has to squint to read through all the information on this important document. Hiring managers and recruiters typically spend seconds glancing at each resume before moving it to the “yes” or “no” pile. Make your resume difficult to read, and you might wind up losing out on an opportunity that would have been perfect for you. The Best Resume Font Type to Use Basic bookprint fonts like Arial, Verdana, Calibri, and Times New Roman work well. However, if you are applying to a position in graphic design or advertising (where resume layout and design might be part of your assessment), employers might be open to alternative fonts. You can make section headers a little larger or bold. And dont forget about white space, too. Keep side margins a standard width. Make your name stand out. Your name (which should be placed at the top of your resume) can be slightly larger. Be Consistent Dont overuse capitalization, bold, italics, underlines, or other emphasizing features. Again, basic works best. Do be consistent in your formatting. For example, if you bold one section heading, bold them all. Make sure all your bullet points are indented the same amount, and that alignment and spacing throughout is consistent. How to Select a Font Select a font from the list at the top of your document before you start writing your resume. OR: Type your resume.Highlight the resume.Either select the font from the pop-up window or select the font from the list at the top of the document.Select the font size you want to use the same way. Confirming Your Font Choice Hiring managers may read your resume on screen, but its also quite likely that theyll print out a copy of your resume. So after you have selected a font and font size, it is always wise to print out a copy of your resume. Take a look at your printed resume to see if its easy to scan through. If you have to squint to read, or find the font appears cramped, choose a different one or select a larger size. Bottom line: You want anyone who sees your resume to be able to easily read it. If you can read the document yourself, and youre not using a novelty font (e.g., comic sans, a handwriting font, etc.), youve probably made a good choice. More Resume Style Tips Be consistent. Your resume, cover letter, and other application materials should look like they’re part of the same package. Choose the same font throughout, and make consistent choices about font size, margin width, and formatting.Don’t get fancy. With a few exceptions (such as graphic design or advertising jobs, as mentioned above) it’s best to keep your resume simple. Creative resumes may put off the hiring manager … or get stuck in the applicant tracking system and never make it a human HR person. Remember: the goal is to impress the reader with your skills and experience, not your resume style choices. Aiming for one page? Don’t tweak your font size to meet your goal. Writing a resume isn’t like writing an essay in school. You can’t squeak in under the wire by making your font larger or smaller. Plus, resume length is less important than resume content. You can always develop a one-page version to hand out at networking events and job fairs, and keep the longer version for other job searching purposes.

4 ways to rise at work if you didnt grow up with a lot of money

4 ways to rise at work if you didn't grow up with a lot of money 4 ways to rise at work if you didn't grow up with a lot of money Rising through the corporate ranks isn’t always easy, but there can be  an additional set of challenges if you grew up in a poor- or working-class household and have to learn social codes as well as your job.A Harvard Business Review article by  Nicole Stephens and Sarah Townsend published this week shed light on how working class and middle and upper class people think of themselves. The upshot: they are less individualist than those from privileged backgrounds.Instead, people who grew up without a lot of money tend to see themselves as part of a community, no matter where they are. The authors cited  research  saying that people of lower income tend to consider themselves “interdependent with and highly connected to  others.”They write that parents in these households  â€œteach their children the importance of following the rules and adjusting to the needs of others, in part because there is no economic safety net to fall back on.”Translation: more money equals a developed sense of individualism, because a financial safety net can often replace a human one. But having less money, while it’s hard, can give people a better understanding of human dynamics. This also relates to finding success at in the office if you come from humble beginnings There are ways to bridge the gap.The roles of “social fit and cultural capital”You don’t know about what you haven’t been exposed to, as shown in the Harvard Business Review article.“Even after students graduate from college and transition to professional workplaces, employees from working-class backgrounds report feeling a lack of social fit and cultural capital, compared with their peers. A student at a top business school, reflecting on her experience in a professional workplace, told us: ‘It was kind of a shock to me to be in a workplace and feel very much like I’m in this very elite environment where I just don’t fit in…. I was much more aware of how I talked, how I presented myself, what I wore, what kind of family experiences I chose to share, all those things,'” Stephens and Townsend wrote.Full rides don’t solve all problemsGetting a coveted full ride to one of the most prestigious institutions doesn’t make hardships evaporate for lower-income students.Nick Anderson wrote about the reality of full rides to Ivy league schools in a 2016 Washington Post article, focusing on Columbia University in New York City. While students with scholarships may have tuition taken care of, they still have to watch living expenses carefully, which cuts them out of a lot of social events and outings.Anderson described just how stressful that scarcity of ready cash can be, to the extent of crowd-sourcing meals.“Here at Columbia University, money pressures lead many to cut corners on textbook purchases and skip city excursions routine for affluent classmates. Some borrow thousands of dollars a year to pay bills. Some feel obliged to send money home occasionally to help their fami lies. Others spend less on university meal plans, slipping extra food into their backpacks when they leave a dining hall and hunting for free grub through a Facebook network called CU Meal Share.”Building social and cultural capital in a new economic groupHere’s how to continue to learn and develop within more privileged economic surroundings, even after you’ve scored a job you never would have dreamed of when you were growing up.1. The earlier, the betterDon’t be afraid to start getting out of your comfort zone as soon as you can.A 2011 research article in Research in Higher Education touched on the importance of learning the social codes of new environments as early as possible. Habituation goes a long way.“One’s habitus sets parameters around that which is imaginable; students cannot aspire to a profession that they have not heard about. Still, early interventions and educational experiences can ‘prepare the soil; for an infusion of cultural and social capital that is important for individual mobility.”That doesn’t mean you’ve lost your chance if you’re already out of college. You can still seize opportunities to learn if you’re already working.2. Take free, online courses to build up common skillsYou already graduated with a degree, but consider spending some of your time taking classes for free, even if that means working late at night or on the weekend, on top of your  side hustle. It makes it easier to learn without the social stress of comparisons to classmates, and extra skills will put you on the playing field with colleagues who had ample training in the byways of business before they got to the same office.MOOCs are Massive, Open Online Courses.  The website edX offers courses though schools like MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Boston University and Georgetown University. Classes like Berkeley’s “Academic and Business Writing”  start soon, while Cornell’s “Structuring Business Agreements for Success” starts today. If fore ign languages are the barrier to rising in the organization, there are many ways to learn outside expensive courses. One of our favorites:  learn Spanish, French, Russian, Italian through the  Duolingo website or download it on Apple’s App store  or Google Play  to study up for free. The truth is that rising in the world from a lower-income background is going to be harder. There’s nothing wrong with putting in extra work outside of the office if it gets you where you want to be.3. Listen up during your commuteTo free podcasts, that is.Listening to experts’ engaging conversations about current events, pop culture and everything in between is a great way to learn something new, not to mention a way to guarantee that you’ll be able to chime in at your next dinner party and to form a common bond with people from other backgrounds. Having a common frame of reference is a great way to feel like less of an outsider.Check out NPR’s selection of podcasts on news, business, pop cu lture, the environment and more. Or scan Apple’s podcasts. Call Your Girlfriend, hosted by Ann Friedman, is a great option for women looking for career and life advice, and Death Sex and Money hosted by Anna Sale is a great conversational ride that shows how to connect well to people. APM’s Dinner Party Download is a great way to keep up on what’s happening in arts and culture. The New York Times‘ The Daily podcast is one of our favorites as well, for its smart, concise discussions of daily news events. You can also listen audio books on your ride to work using  Audible.4. Network, network, networkWho you know will always be important, so seek out ways to get to know people working in a field that excites you. People of all backgrounds can make great connections, because what makes a great professional network is the ability to connect with others - and that’s possible regardless of where you came from. In fact, different living experiences are actually an advantage in net working, because our differences are what make us interesting.Another advantage: those from lower-income backgrounds rely on community and are open to collaboration, which makes understanding people easier. We like Kelly Hoey’s Build Your Dream Network as a good primer on how to form good connections that will always be ready with advice or a good job recommendation. (The key: reciprocity. Be there for people who want to be there for you.)Heather R. Huhman, founder and president of content marketing and digital PR consultancy Come Recommended, wrote about how who you know can help you grow in a 2014 Business Insider article.“Personal and professional growth is crucial to a successful career. Similar to the guidance and support provided by a portion of your network, some of your contacts might also be beneficial in helping your reach new heights within your career, whether it’s pushing you to apply for a position you initially felt was out of your realm or simply inspiring you t o work harder on a daily basis,” Huhman wrote.Even if you didn’t grow up in a household with a lot of money, there are ways to fill in the gaps and continue to educate yourself after you’re already employed.

10 Big Mistakes Vets Make Applying to Federal Jobs

10 Big Mistakes Vets Make Applying to Federal Jobs 10 Big Mistakes Vets Make Applying to Federal Jobs 10 Big Mistakes Vets Make Applying to Federal Jobs Leaving a military career after 5, 10, or 20 years is traumatic. The career transition out of military is difficult no matter what your rank. The good news is that the federal government is basically just â€Å"the other side of the desk. You’re going to take the â€Å"hands-on skills and technical training from your military experience and convert it over to the policy, program, support, and administration side of the work you have been doing – maybe. The first federal resume after military is your most important resume and the most complex because you will translate your skills for a new career, mission, and customer. Veterans are perfect for federal civil service positions because of their dedication to public service, the nation’s security, specialized expertise, knowledge of certain missions, technical skills and training, leadership, dedication, work ethic, attitude and willingness to learn and start-over. What’s more, these skills allow you to add 5 or 10 preference points to your application score. However, sometimes transitioning veterans rush through the federal application and make several mistakes when applying for public-sector jobs TOP 10 MISTAKES 1.) I only apply for jobs on USAJOBS (or CPOL or DONHR or WHS). If you limit your search to just one agency or website, you are truly restricting yourself. There are at least five major sites where you can create a profile, set up a resume builder, answer questions, and apply for a federal job: www.usajobs.gov – The official government jobs website, includes Air Force civilian positions www.cpol.army.mil – The website where all Army jobs are posted and where you would apply for an Army position military.com/careers – A commercial site that manages resumes and job postings for federal agencies. www.donhr.navy.mil – The website for Navy and USMC civilian positions www.whs.mil – Department of Defense civilian jobs are posted here as is the resume builder and application. 2.) I only apply for jobs without KSA narratives. If you limit your search to applications that do not require KSAs, you will cut out many job opportunities with the Departments of HHS, VA, Interior, Commerce, Justice, Labor, Transportation and others. You will need to learn how to write KSA narratives and questionnaire essays for a successful federal job search. KSAs are just examples that demonstrate you have a certain Knowledge, Skill or Ability. You can use the KSA Builder developed by The Resume Place to write your â€Å"stories that will demonstrate that you do have a certain knowledge, skill, or ability. 3.) I have never written a resume and I don’t know how to get started. It’s time to find the position descriptions, old SF-171s, evaluations, NSPS self-assessments, training documents and build your federal resume. The author of this article has developed a free federal resume builder where you can build your work experience, education, training, accomplishments, certifications, and other information. 4.) Service before self. That’s what we are taught. I’m not used to bragging, so I usually don’t select the highest level in the questionnaires (or go on and on about accomplishments). When you read the selection of self-assessment answers, be very careful to think about all of the experience you have. An EPA federal human resources specialist said this about the questionnaires and your choices: â€Å"Give yourself all of the credit that you can in selecting the answers in a Questionnaire. The questionnaires are scored like an examination, so your skills at the highest level will be important to get referred for a position. 5.) My job was totally unique and I can’t write about all that I did in the last 5 years, etc. This is a challenge because there is a unique military language with its own acronyms. However, you can write about the skills that you have, including instruction, planning, leading a team, mentoring, personnel operations, administrative operations, problem-solving, negotiations, advocacy, interpersonal skills, and technical skills. The military-to-federal resume requires a translation of skills to the new agency. Your past mission may not match, but the skills CAN match. And you can prove one year specialized experience, as long as that one year doesn’t require special mission knowledge. In other words, if you change from military to transportation, the transportation announcement may require experience in transportation. 6.) I have used the resume I developed from TAP class and it’s not getting me referred although I’m qualified for these positions. The private-industry resume is shorter than a typical federal resume. The bullet style, one-line description resume won’t be as effective for a federal resume. The recommended format is the outline format. This features your top skills that are transferable to the new position. You could write your description in five or six small paragraphs with headings such as: trainer / instructor; team leader and supervisor; emergency operations planner; interpersonal skills and liaison; administrative operations. These five skills are the most transferable. After you create the outline of your duties with five or six sentences to describe each, you can add two or three accomplishments that will include your outstanding services in your operation. 7.) I didn’t know I had to tweak and edit my resume for each announcement. With the Army website, www.cpol.army.mil, you could apply to 10 jobs in one day very easily because this system is a Resume Only application with a Self-Nomination online form. But you really should slow down and read the announcement carefully to find the keywords for your resume because the HR specialist will be looking for these keywords throughout your resume. If you haven’t edited each resume with keywords, your resume may not get referred. You can apply quickly, but why bother if you don’t edit and tweak the resume to make sure the keywords are included? 8.) I have accomplishments embedded in the duties section. Military personnel will write one huge â€Å"block of information for their duties and include the accomplishments somewhere in the middle of the paragraph. This type of content will be difficult to read and difficult for the busy human resources specialists who want to find the best qualified applicants. There is a difference between a regular duty and an accomplishment. They are both important on the federal resume. But the accomplishments are critical if you are to stand out as the most qualified candidate. If you have had a job for over two years then you have probably been involved with special projects, problem-solving, new programs, new initiatives, new computer programs to improve efficiency, and staff changes. Accomplishments might include your assignment to a task of managing a special operations, situation or program, implementing new processes, and achieving a result. These accomplishments should be written separately from the duties, so that it is clear you have performed more than your position description and you are worthy of a promotion. Furthermore, you want to let the HR specialist know that you’re a federal employee who can resolve problems, take care of customers very well, and achieve and exceed support to the mission. 9.) I didn’t realize that my 5 or 10 point preference really makes a big difference. Yes, most military personnel will have 5 point preference for service within the last 3 years. Military personnel with disabilities may have a 10 point preference for their application. Your 5 or 10 point preference can give you an advantage over a candidate that does not have preference points. 10.) I can’t take personal credit for the work of my team, so what should I write? The â€Å"team mentality of federal employees and supervisors is not going to get you hired. It’s time to take credit for your contributions as a leader. Before you apply, ask yourself the following questions: Would the project have been successful without you? Did you set the agenda? Establish priorities? Assign tasks? Solve the problems as they occurred? Brief senior executives on status? Manage resources throughout? Create reports and analyze progress? Lead the team members to meet deadlines and review the quality of their work? Did you â€Å"babysit the group on occasion? Then you need to take credit for leadership, innovation, new ideas, methodologies, policies, procedures, project management strategies that YOU developed and implemented. You are the leader of the team, program, project or group. Write about your leadership and the outcome of the group you lead. The government has on average 100,000 jobs everyday posted on the main website: USAJOBS.GOV. Consider these positions seriously. They are worth your time and patience. There are good books on federal resume writing and federal job search strategies. Studying federal resume samples and KSAs can help you master the federal job search process and result in a career that can change your life. Need help with your veteran federal resume? What Comedians in cars getting coffee teaches us about life

What Comedians in cars getting coffee teaches us about life What Comedians in cars getting coffee teaches us about life “To me,” Seinfeld says “if life boils down to one thing, it’s movement. To live is to keep moving.”Pretty pithy stuff for someone who might be more well known for jokes about airline peanuts or why dogs are broke (the answer… no pockets). But successful comedian Jerry Seinfeld often uses his observational humor stand-up style to comment on life and career - from funny tidbits about why the road less traveled might be that way to laugh lines about how doing nothing is already something. His extremely successful “show about nothing” Seinfeld, often hinted at larger themes and made him an international star. The resulting payoffs gave him the freedom to do whatever he wanted to do next.  And one thing you can say about Jerry now, he’s found his joy. His most recent endeavor the show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee lets him indulge his huge successes in media by combining things he loves, classic cars and talking with great comic talents. The series is a wonderful gl impse into the lives of the most innovative and hilarious minds of our time (along with a look at some truly lovely old cars). And their discussions cover more than just their favorite gags, but really get into life lessons that could help give you a little direction too.  The Zebra collected some life lessons from Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee to give you something to think about from an askew angle when you are trying to get a handle on life or your career path. Take a look at what big names like Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey can teach you about how to look at what’s ahead of you. From advice on marriage direct from a conversation with Seinfeld Co-Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Alec Baldwin’s thoughts on parenting, these pieces of inspiration will give you a lift today and let you ask the question often posed by Seinfeld on stage - “Who are these people?”Kee-Clemmer is a content marketer based in Austin, Texas. My Worst Job Interview Mistake (and How You Can Avoid It)

My Worst Job Interview Mistake (and How You Can Avoid It) My Worst Job Interview Mistake (and How You Can Avoid It) I sat across a conference room table from the owner of the marketing agency where I was interviewing. I was fresh out of college and eager to land any sort of role that made use of my communication and journalism degree- which meant I needed to ace this interview for an entry-level position. “So, what exactly is inbound marketing to you?” he asked, while I made a mental note to stop fidgeting with the hem of my shirt, “How would you define it?” Immediately, I froze. I sat there slack-jawed and embarrassed. All I knew about inbound marketing was that it was what this particular agency specialized in. Other than that, I was pretty much stumped- to me, it was nothing but another buzzword I heard thrown around frequently. “Uhh…” I responded, “Well…” After that, I’m sure you can imagine how I talked my way around the question that I had zero idea how to answer. Needless to say, I didn’t get that job. And, while I’ll be the first to admit that I wallowed in my own-self pity for days following that humbling interview, the experience did illustrate one important job search lesson that I will absolutely never forget: you should always, always, always research the company before your interview. It’s cliché advice that likely makes you roll your eyes at this point. What exactly does that even mean? Here are four things you should absolutely research before you ever sit down for that job interview to avoid making the same job interview mistake that I did: 1. The Basics You know that you need to do your research. But, that in and of itself is pretty broad advice. What do you need to know? Is there going to be a pop quiz where you need to recite the company’s entire mission statement in Portuguese? Probably not (at least, I certainly hope not). When you’re job searching, no right-minded employer is going to expect that you’ve dug through the archives and committed every useless factoid to memory. However, you do need to know enough to show that you’re highly interested in that company and engaged in the hiring process. Here are the nuts-and-bolts things you should ensure you have down pat: What the company does: What products do they create? What services do they offer? What problem do they solve? This is where I epically flopped in my own job interview. Major announcements that have recently occurred: Were they recently acquired? Did they just receive a new round of funding? Did they just open up a new office location? What major company happenings should you be aware of? How this role fits within the company: Obviously, you’re interviewing for a specific job. While you won’t have all of the insider insight quite yet, you should have a solid grasp on how this role and its related department fits into the big picture and helps the company achieve its overarching goals. If you can have at least those three things well-researched and in your back pocket, you’re sure to make a positive impression. 2. Your Interviewer While you need to have an understanding of the company and the job in general, it also doesn’t hurt to do a little bit of digging on the people who will be conducting your interview. Whether it’s someone from HR or the department leader you would potentially be working under, do some clever searching to see what you can find out about those points of contact. Granted, you won’t be expected to know any of these things. But, if you can find a shared point of interest- maybe you’re both alumni of the same college or you’re both training for your first marathon, for example- that never hurts to establish some rapport and leave a memorable mark. 3. A Fact Relevant to the Position Now that you have some basic knowledge of the entire company and your specific interviewer, it’s time to dive more into the actual position that you’re applying for. Do your best to arm yourself with two or three research-backed and position-relevant facts that you can weave into your answers. To stick with our marketing example, when asked about what interests you about that particular role, you could tie in a company fact to your answer like this: “I’ve seen the high-quality work you complete at this agency, such as that entire social campaign you did for the local food shelter. I’m eager to bring my own creativity to your team and to continue launching amazing projects like that one.” This answer is impressive, because it touches on your passion for the work along with showcasing your existing knowledge of the company. 4. A Random Tidbit Finally, it never hurts to just have one random fact about the company stashed and ready to go. It might go totally unused. However, if you find a natural way to work it in, it’s a surefire way to make yourself that much more memorable. Whether they just raised a certain sum of money for a local charity or you’re confident that you’d dominate their company-wide chili cook-off, going beyond the website to get some lesser-known facts demonstrates that you’re highly interested in the company and the opportunity. I still blush at the memory of flubbing one of my first job interviews by not adequately researching the company. Fortunately, you don’t need to make the same mistake. Make sure that you know these four things mentioned above before your next job interview, and you’re sure to have your bases covered. What It Takes to Succeed in Sales

What It Takes to Succeed in Sales What It Takes to Succeed in Sales Sales can be tough work, from prospecting and qualifying right through to closing the deal. Each step in the sales process can be filled with challenges, Some sales professionals understand that sales is often a numbers game, and more importantly, know how to use those numbers to propel them towards their goals. Sales is more of a process than it is a task. To understand the sales numbers game, it helps to review the different stages that are common to most sales cycles. Prospecting for Clients Prospecting is where the sales cycle begins. It involves identifying potential customers using whatever qualifying methods help you determine who is and who is not a potential customer. A big part of prospecting is not only identifying potential customers but calling on them. Prospecting calls can be accomplished in several ways, including cold and warm phone calls, direct mail and face-to-face visits. Prospecting is easy when you have a product to sell that everyone wants. For products that might be necessary but not exciting, such as insurance, selling requires you to play the numbers game, which is really simple and really tough at the same time: The larger the number of prospects you have, the higher the number of sales youll make. Getting an Appointment Once your prospects have been identified and contacted, the next step is to secure an appointment. Getting an appointment is generally a sign of interest on behalf of your prospects and each appointment set should be seen as a victory. Having more appointments leads to more chances to make a sale. Submitting a Proposal As part of many sales cycles, you will need to deliver some sort of a proposal to your customer that spells out your offered solution or product along with the price. As in each other step of the sales cycle and numbers game, the more proposals you can bring to qualified, interested parties, the more sales youll make. Close the Deal Each step in a sales cycle should be designed to lead up to closing the deal. If you did a thorough job with qualifying the customer and designing a proposal that matches the customers needs and handles any objections, then you should be all set to close the deal. This, of course, sounds much easier than it is but closing a sales cycle in which you did not do a good job with the steps leading up to the close is significantly more challenging. How to Set Up and Play The Numbers Game While some may argue that there are more steps to a typical sales cycle than the basics presented here, these four steps provide a solid summary of a sales cycle. To understand the numbers game part of sales, you need to start with your goals. In other words, armed with a full understanding of your compensation plan, determine much money you want to earn in your position. Once you are clear on how much total compensation you want to earn, figure out how much you earn on an average sale. If you are too new to the position to know what an average sale pays, ask your co-workers for their average income per sale. Once you know the average commission for an average sale, divide your total desired commission income by the average sales commission amount. The result will be the number of sales you need to close in a year to hit your income goal. To serve as a simple example, assume that you need to close 50 sales per year to hit your income goal. Next, determine how many proposals that you deliver result in a closed sale. Again, if you are new to your sales position, reach out to your co-workers to find out how many proposals usually end up with a sale. Using the above example of having to close 50 sales to hit your goal, assume that you need five proposals to close one deal. In the example, you will need to deliver 250 proposals in a year to make 50 sales and hit your income goal. The next step is to determine how many appointments you need before finding a customer who is ready for, and qualified for a proposal to be designed and presented. To keep things clean, assume you need two appointments before finding a prospect to propose to. Using the example numbers, you will need 500 appointments per year to arrive at 250 proposals. The last step is to find out how many prospecting calls you will need to complete. Again, determine how many prospecting calls (cold calls, phone calls, etc.) that you need to secure a customer appointment. Say that you need five prospecting calls to get one appointment. Putting the Numbers All Together Using the examples above, you can assume that you need five calls to set one appointment, two appointments to deliver one proposal and five proposals to close one deal. Once you have your total number of sales needed to hit your income goal, just work backward to arrive at your specific numbers. In this example, you will need 1,500 prospecting calls to secure 500 appointments, that will yield 250 proposals, resulting in 50 sales. You will need to determine your numbers to make this work for you. Once you know the numbers, you can design your days with much more focus. If you end up needing to make 1,500 prospecting calls per year, you should break this number down to monthly, weekly and daily activity standards. If you work 250 days per year and your numbers show you that you need to make 1,500 prospecting calls, you will have a daily target of 6 prospecting calls per day. Seeing a small number like 6 calls per day is much more motivating than working towards hitting 1,500 calls in a year.

3 Fixes You Can Make Today To Your Broken Job Search

3 Fixes You Can Make Today To Your Broken Job Search 3 Fixes You Can Make Today To Your Broken Job Search INBOX: Jewel, I'm having a problem with my experience apparently working against me. I have applied for more than a dozen jobs that I meet 100% of the qualifications for. But they're telling me I'm overqualified. Doesn't overqualified, also mean qualified to do the job I applied for?The last time you looked for a job, you didn't have as much experience, and the opportunities seemed easier to come by. Now that you bring more experience to the table, what gives? Why would't that be a bonus? The reality is that when you offer a wealth of experience, you're showing yourself to be a multi-dimensional professional who brings nuances to the table. Since you are not typical, your job search can't be typical either. Let’s talk about 3 fixes you can make today to your broken job search. Fix #1: Start Breaking The Rules The employers, recruiters, and job boards will have you think the reason you don’t get the calls back you think you should, or don’t get invited to interview for roles you could do with your eyes closed, is simply that you didn’t follow the directions on the application â€" you didn’t check off all the boxes. Well, that’s not the whole truth. Here’s what works: check off all the boxes, then break the box open. At the same time that you complete your online application, identify the decision maker in the organization and reach out directly to that person. It’s important to follow the directions 1st because, otherwise, the person will just tell you to apply on the corporate web site. But if you’ve done that already, say so, then initiate a conversation centered on what you know is happening in the organization right now, and how your particular brand of expertise may prove useful. Fix #2: Expand Your Horizons If your job search consists of clicking “apply” and “submit” online, you’ll be in the job search for the better part of a year, if not longer. There’s almost infinitely more available than what you see online. In fact, it’s what you don’t see online that is usually where the magic happens. More than 70% of opportunities are unadvertised â€" otherwise, “the hidden job market.” It’s not really all that hidden. You just need to know where to look. Identify the organizations you’d like to work for. The criteria you use to build a list of organizations is largely up to you â€" you control this. What is within a commutable distance from your home? What industries are growing in your area? Most major metropolitan cities offer a Business Journal newspaper that provides a wealth of information. You learn the comings and goings of different companies. You see what organizations are growing â€" these are the ones that are hiring. Research to find the decision maker and directly reach out to that person. Fix #3: Step Out Of The Yesterday & Into Today “Research” does not necessarily equal “history.” If your 1st thought is to jump on the company’s web site, understand that the “Company History” page is unlikely to yield anything about what’s happening in the organization right now. When you approach a decision maker, you don’t need to regurgitate the old knowledge you gleaned from the corporate history page. Much more impressive is when you get social. Twitter is an ever-flowing river of information that’s happening right now. Nearly every corporate organization has a Twitter presence. Follow them online to see what they’re working on and what’s coming up. Be a super-ninja by finding out who the principals of the company are and following their personal feeds. Doing so makes your approach fresh and timely, putting you light years ahead of most of your competition. Contact with real human beings can skyrocket your likelihood of job search success from 1-2% to 40-70%. There’s a 1-Page “New Job” Cheat Sheet & Webinar that shows you the exact steps to triple your responses from the employers and recruiters. We walk you through it so you know exactly what to do and say. Make sure you don’t miss out on another opportunity where you know for a fact you meet all the qualifications.
